Sage falls to SUNY-IT in season finale
Albany, NY----The Sage College’s hosted SUNY-IT on Tuesday night in the Kahl Center in the final match of the inaugural season for the Gators. The Wildcats of SUNY-IT spoiled the Gators’ finale as they tallied the 3-0 win to improve to 9-18 overall, while Sage wraps their first varsity campaign with a 5-20 mark
SUNY-IT took the first set 30-14 and fended off a late set rally by Sage in the second set, 31-29. The final set went to the Wildcats, 30-24.
SUNY-IT’s sophomore outside hitter Ryan Meller (Eden, NY/Eden Central) had a team-high 19 with seven digs and two total blocks to pace his squad on the evening. Freshman middle hitter Jeffrey Coon (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) added 13 kills with three digs and six total blocks including four block assists. Junior setter Jonathan Brochu (Latham, NY/Shaker) added 30 setting assists in the match with two kills and four digs, elevating his season total of setting assists to 810 on the year.
For the Gators, freshman hitter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) racked up a double-double with his 15 kills and 15 digs. Rookie middle hitter Jed Kubisch (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) added a double-double as well with 11 kills and 18 digs with a pair of blocks. Rookie middle hitter Ryan Couch (Nyskayuna, NY/Colonie), this week’s Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, added seven digs with five kills and a pair of blocks. Rookie setter Anthony Gerace (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) added 33 setting assists for the Gators in the match with eight digs and four blocks.
On the 2010 season, Ray racked up 272 kills with 279 digs, while Kubisch added 262 kills and 277 digs. Gerace led the team with his 618 setting assists.
