Old Westbury overtakes Sage women in league action
Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team hosted the Panthers of SUNY-Old Westbury on Sunday afternoon in the Neff Center. Old Westbury tallied the 74-48 win to improve to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference and Sage drops to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Old Westbury held a 44-13 lead at the intermission and made 15-of-20 free throws to spur their lead. By game's end, the Panthers had four players finish in double-digit scoring, while sophomore guard Deslyn Applewhaite (Brooklyn, NY/Brentwood) tallied her fifth double-double of the season on 13 points and 15 rebounds. She had 14 defensive boards with a pair of blocks and six steals. Rookie guard Clarissa Gallagher (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street Campus) finished with a game-high 19 points for the Panthers.
Sage's rookie guard Nicole Lanteri (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) connected on a career-best 16 points, while senior guard Sarah Carciobolo (Niskayuna, NY/South Colonie) finished with 13 points and continues to add to her career total that now stands at 1,020 points.
For the Gators, junior guard Carly Vallee (East Greenbush, NY/Catholic Central) also had double-digits as she had 12 points on four three-point baskets. She leads the squad with her 43 three's this year, a personal-best. She has now elevated her career total to 97, which is fourth all-time on the career list and just 6 off the record set by Kelly Murphy (1999-2002).
Sage's sophomore forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) and junior forward Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) each pulled down eight rebounds for the Gators, while Hackett added her 10th blocks of the season and now has 49 career blocks as the No. 2 person on the career record book.
Sage returns to action in a road Skyline Conference game on January 25 as they visit Purchase College for an 8 p.m. contest.
