Second half efforts not enough as Sage falls to MSMC
Newburgh, NY--- Behind 23 points from senior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.Y.) and 16 points from senior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team remained undefeated in Skyline Conference play after posting a 78-56 win over the Sage Gators. The Knights improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Gators move to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 in Skyline play.
With a 6-4 lead just three minutes into the game, the Knights exploded for an 11-0 run capped with 10:47 on the clock as Mocanu banked in a layup. In the closing ten minutes of the half Horvers shot a blistering 3-4 from the three point arc, while teammate Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) also added one from downtown. After limiting the Gators to shooting just 23.1-percent from the field, the Mount possessed a 44-19 lead at the half.
The Knights' shooting cooled off in the second half and the Gators were able to capitalize. Sage outscored the Mount by a score of 37-34 in the second half, however after their strong first half the Knights prevailed.
Mocanu led all scorers and Horvers was the only other Knights to record double-digit points. Both junior Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and sophomore Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) collected seven rebounds for the Mount.
Sage freshman guard Megan Bowman (Saranac, NY/Saranac) , newcomer Nicole Lanteri (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) and junior Carly Vallee (East Greenbush, NY/Catholic Central) each added 14 points for the Gators.
Vallee connected on four baskets from downtown and continues to Sage with her 26 three-pointers this season and now has 80 career three-points, which stands fifth best in Gator history.
Sage returns to action in Skyline Conference play as they will host NYU-Polytechnic on January 12 in a 6 p.m. conference doubleheader in the Kahl Center.
