Sage women make it four in a row with 67-63 win at Union
Schenectady, NY--- The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team travelled to Union College on Wednesday night for a non-conference game. The Gators posted the impressive 67-63 win to extend its win streak to four games. Overall on the season, Sage is now 5-5, while Union drops to 4-4.
Sage held a 34-22 edge at the break and finished the contest with a very balanced output as eight of the nine players scored in the contest. Junior Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) finished with a season-best 16 points, while rookie Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) added 11 rebounds with eight points. Junior guard Carly Vallee (East Greenbush, NY/Catholic Central) tallied 12 points in the game, including four three-point baskets.
Vallee now leads the team with 19 three-pointers this season and has now tallied 73 career three-pointers which is good enough for the No. 5 spot on the Gator career record book. In the game, Sage hit 7-of-11 shots from downtown (63.6%) and converted 16-of-18 shots from the line.
Jefferson matched Union's sophomore Brittney Kenney with 11 rebounds for the Gators. Rookie Megan Bowman (Saranac, NY/Saranac) added seven boards and five assists for Sage, which had a 43-41 rebounding advantage and shot 43%. The Gators held Union to 35% shooting. Sage made 16 of 18 free throws on the night.
Rachel Beaulac scored 12 points with six rebounds and Shayla Madden also had six boards with 11 points for the Dutchwomen. Mary Donohue matched Bowman with five assists.
The Gators led by as many as 15 in the first half, 34-19 with 2:47 left, and had a 34-22 lead at halftime. Hackett scored 10 in the first 20 minutes. A jumper by Hackett with 18:01 left in the second half made it 36-26 for Sage, but the Dutchwomen stormed back and pulled to within two on consecutive three pointers by Madeline Granato, and the run of 13-6 in 6:46 made it a two point game at 44-42. But that was as close as the hosts would get, and Sage was back up by 11 on a jumper by Jefferson for a 60-49 lead with 4:02 remaining. The Gators made seven of eight free throws in the final 41 seconds, and four in the last 13 seconds, to hold on for the triumph.
Saturday will be a an exciting and busy day at Sage as the Gators will be sponsoring the NCAA's Take a Kid to the Game in conjunction with the women's and men's home Skyline Conference doubleheader on January 7. The action will take place in the Kahl Campus Center on the campus of The Sage Colleges (Albany, NY) and commences with the women's contest at 1 p.m. and will continue with the men's game at 3 p.m. Sage will host the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College (LI) and will sponsor a wide variety of activities in conjunction with the games. Admission is free!
In addition to a pair of half-time contests for children during the games, Sage will also be holding its "Tees-for-Three Contest, sponsored by Recovery Sports Grill. Sage will be handing out free t-shirts for every three-point basket made by Sage's women's and men's basketball teams at home games this season.
