Hartwick spoils Sage women's team home opener
Troy, NY--- The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team hosted the Hawks of Hartwick College on Tuesday evening in the Neff Center in its home opener. Hartwick came from behind and came away with the 59-42 win to improve to 3-2. Sage falls to 1-4 on the young season.
Sage held a lead for most of the first half before a run by the Hawks in the final five minutes of the stanza gave Hartwick a 27-22 halftime lead. Pacing the Hawks in the victory was sophomore guard Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) as she led all players with 15 points, including nine in the first half. Hartwick's sophomore Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) added 14 points, while sophomore center Tracey Koch (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central) added a game-high 10 rebounds with six offensive boards and helped Hartwick to a convincing 54 to 27 edge on the boards.
Sage's junior forward Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) returned to the lineup and proceeded to pour in a season-high 13 points as she made 6-of-9 shots from the floor. Rookie forward Megan Bowman (Saranac, NY/Saranac) added 11 points as well for the Gators, while rookie Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) netted six boards in the contest.
The Gators open Skyline Conference play at SUNY-Old Westbury on December 3 in a 2 p.m. match-up, while Hartwick is in action that same day at Morrisville State in a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
