Martin and Bezio tally career high days but its not enough as Sage falls on the road
Old Westbury, NY---The Sage Colleges women's basketball team travelled to SUNY-Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon for a Skyline Conference match-up. Old Westbury tallied the 84-73 win to improve to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while Sage drops to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the league.
The Panthers got a game-high 28 points from rookie Kim Weathers (Wyandanch, NY/Wyandanch) as she was 8-19 from the floor with a 10-14 effort from the line.
Despite a strong second half, Sage could not overcome their first half performance as they trailed 37-28 at the break.
Sage's rookie forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) exploded for a career-high 25 points on the day as she made 10-of-14 shots from the floor and was a perfect 3-3 from the line. She netted a double-double to lead the team as she had 10 boards with nine defensive rebounds and tied her personal best effort on the boards in the contest.
Sophomore Carly Vallee (East Greenbush, NY/Catholic Central) added a season-high 17 points and connected on five three-point buckets in the game. On her young career, she now has 33 career treys and ranks 11th on the career list with her accuracy.
Junior guard Tiffany Bezio (Whitehall, NY/Whitehall) also had a career day as she had 12 points off the bench bettering her previous Gator high of six points. All told, the Gators made 11 three-point baskets and have already made 75 three point baskets this season, which is already No. 6 on the single-season team record book. The school record for most team three-point baskets in a season is 109, which was set in 2004-2005 and is well within reach for the 2010-11 Sage squad.
Sage returns to action on January 10 travelling to Mt. St. Mary College for a 7 p.m. road Skyline Conference game.
