Union tops Sage in battle of local women's hoops squads
Albany, NY---The Sage Colleges women's basketball team hosted the Dutchwomen of Union College on Thursday evening in the Kahl Center. Union tallied the 72-43 win to improve to 5-3 overall, while Sage falls to 4-6 on the season.
Union's senior forward Lauren McCormick (Hoosick Falls, NY/Catholic Central) led all players in the contest with her 16 points, while rookie Marissa Ray (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and sophomore guard Shayla Madden (Colonie, NY/Colonie Central) each tallied 11 points.
Union held a 34-28 lead at the break as McCormick led the Dutchwomen with 10 points. Rookie guard Amy Loya (Bethel, CT/Immaculate) was a perfect 4-4 from the floor in the first stanza and had eight of 10 points her points in the first half of the game and finished the night going 5-5 from the floor as Union shot 48.3% from the floor as a team (28-58).
For the Gators, sophomore guard Ashleigh Nelson (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) had six points and hit two three pointers to help Sage to a 60.0% effort from three point range in the first half of action. She led the team with her nine points in the game. Rookie forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) also had six first half points and was held scoreless in the second half of play.
Sophomore Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) added eight points and was high rebounder for Sage with six, while senior forward Lauren Hennessey (Burlington, MA/Burlington) and Loya led Union with seven boards each.
Sage returns to action on January 8 travelling to SUNY-Old Westbury for a 2 p.m. road Skyline Conference game, while Union returns to play on January 11 facing Skidmore College on the road at 6 p.m.
