Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' men's basketball team hosted the Highlanders of Houghton College on Friday night in an Empire 8 contest. Sage collected the 92-66 win to improve to 10-12 overall and 5-8 in the league, while Houghton drops to 3-19 overall and 0-13 in the conference.
After a slow start, Houghton played tough down the stretch and tied the game in the final minutes of the first half and Sage lead 42-39 at the half as senior Jordan DeVaughn (Jacksonville, FL/Flora McDonald Academy) buried a three-pointer with 27 seconds left. Houghton narrowed Sage's lead, which stood at 24-13 with 10:35 left and tied the game at 37-37 with 1:47. Sage's junior center Kevin Lenehan (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) had 13 first half points with seven rebounds, while Devaughn had eight points at the break.
Junior guard Dylan Lambert (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) added 18 points in the first half to lead Houghton as they shot 48.4% from the floor (15-31 and hit 7-of-7 free throws.
Sage opened the second half on a 13-0 run and never looked back en route to the convincing home win.
Lenehan finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Devaughn collected 14 points with seven assists. Sophomore Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) added 14 points off the bench with five rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Sophomore Isaiah Scurry (Albany, NY/Albany) also added 13 points for the Gators with two steals and an assist.
Lambert led all players with his 25 points and added nine rebounds with four assists and four steals. Senior guard Carl Holmes (Cuba, NY/Cuba-Rushford) netted 13 points, while sophomore forward Cody Johnson (Sinclairville, NY/Cassadaga Valley) finished with eight points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists for the Highlanders.
Sage will return to action on Saturday, February 10 hosting Alfred University in a 2 p.m. Empire 8 match-up in Kahl Gym. Houghton College travels to New Jersey to face Stevens in a 3 p.m. Empire 8 contest on Saturday.
