Men's soccer team tallies program's first win; Sage downs Wells, 3-2
Aurora, NY--The Sage Colleges men’s soccer team collected the program’s first varsity win on Wednesday night as the Gators beat Wells College, 3-2. The team needed just three matches to earn the first win for head Coach Kyle Clancy. Sage stands at 1-2 overall, while Wells falls to 2-2.
Clancy said of his team’s first win, “I was very happy with how the whole team played and they showed great composure and resiliency for such a young team in fighting from goal back to hold on and win the game!”
Wells led 1-0 at the half as John Iapoce Boiceville, NY/Onteora) scored at 25:33. Freshman defender Matt Flaherty (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) etched his name into Sage’s record book with the first goal in team history as he converted a feed from freshman midfielder Chris Catania (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) to tie the action at 1-1 at 64:03.
Minutes later, Catania would convert a feed from rookie midfielder Kris Kallenbach (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central) at 69:48. Freshman Wesley Finch (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) tallied what would turn out to the be the game-winner at 83:25. Wells converted a penalty kick at 87:49 as Cody Glassman (Thornhurst, PA/North Pocono) scored to pull his squad within one goal with less than three minutes left in the match.
Sage’s while rookie goalie Carmen Volpe (Cohoes, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) played the whole match in goal with four saves. Freshman goalie CJ Bayly (Waymart, PA/Western Wayne) had four saves in the loss.
Sage will take to the pitch again on Saturday, September 11 for a 1 p.m. contest at Westfield State University.
