Albany, NY---The Sage Colleges men’s soccer team opened the 2010 season this fall and along the way had many high-water marks in their first varsity season. The latest came yesterday with the announcement of the 2010 Skyline Conference Men’s Soccer All-Star Team. The Gators had three players named to the All-Star Second Team for their outstanding play this fall.
Earning honors from Sage were rookie forward Chris Giustina (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi), rookie midfielder Evan Southworth (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) and rookie defender, Nick Mauro (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central).
For the season, Guistina was the team’s second leading scorer as he had 13 points on five goals and three assists. A 17-game starter for the team, he gave the team consistency and depth on the forward line this fall. He added one game-winning goal over the course of the fall. He was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week twice and finished the fall ranking third in game-winning goals.
Another of the team’s honored players was midfielder, Evan Southworth. He connected for two goals and two assists for six points, while starting 16 games for Sage this fall. A talented athlete, he gave Sage ability on both ends of the field, while helping the team with their transition game.
A defensive anchor, Nick Mauro started 16 games for Sage. He added one goal from his defensive position, but helped the team produce an impressive 1.29 goals per game average that led the league as the team yielding just 22 goals all season. The team also ranked second in the conference with an impressive 1.26 goals against average.
For the season, Sage produced a 7-9-1 overall record with an fourth place finish in the Skyline Conference after going 6-3-1 in conference play. The team earned a bid to the league’s post-season tournament and hosted a quarterfinal game as a first-year program.
