Albany, NY---The Sage Colleges men's basketball program hosted nearby Albany College of Pharmacy on Friday night on the Kahl Campus Center. The contest was Sage's Relay For Life game helping to raise funds for the American Cancer Society in conjunction with Sage's Sixth Annual Relay for Life event which kicks off on Saturday, November 21 in the Kahl Center at 1 p.m.
In their first week as a Division III program, Sage's men's team would earn the first win for rookie head coach Brian Barnes as his Gators delivered a 100-60 victory over the Panthers. With the win, Sage is now 1-2 overall and ACP drops to 1-3.
Sage led 52-12 at the intermission as junior Ryan Harris (Hudson Falls, NY/Glens Falls) added nine points and was 3-5 from three-point range. As a team, Sage shot an impressive 52.6% from the floor in the first stanza, while holding the Panthers to a 12.9% effort (4-31).
By game's end, Harris would finish with 12 points with nine rebounds and three steals. Sage's high scorer was freshman Mervin Springer (Copiague, NY/Copiague) as he netted 14 points off the bench with five rebounds, while freshman forward Mason Horne (Albany, NY/LaSalle Institute) also added 13 points on the night.
Freshmen Sigbert Guy (East New York, NY/Transit Tech) and Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) added 10 points apiece. Lee also hauled down nine rebounds with a pair of blocks as Sage shot 47.1% from the floor on the night.
For ACP, freshman guard Keith Curtin (Cohoes, NY) added 16 points, while sophomore forward Peter Aiken (Pottersville, NY) netted 14 points with seven rebounds. Senior center Zach Bratek (DeWitt, NY) led all players with his 10 rebounds and three blocks, and contributed eight points.
Sage returns to action on November 24 travelling to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. non-conference match-up, while Albany College of Pharmacy travels to Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday, November 22 for a 1 p.m. contest.
