PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Russell Sage College wrapped up its season-opening weekend at the SUNY Plattsburgh Tournament by picking up a pair of non-conference victories.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Russell Sage College wrapped up its season-opening weekend at the SUNY Plattsburgh Tournament by picking up a pair of non-conference victories.
After defeating SUNY Potsdam 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23), the Gators erased a 2-1 deficit to clip the host Cardinals 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-20, 15-13).
"I'm really happy with how the weekend went for us overall," said Head Coach Rosilyn Cummings. "We have a lot of young talent that got a lot of quality experience against good competition. After an awesome weekend of volleyball I'm looking forward to seeing what this season has in store."
Senior Ashleigh Gerkman (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) led the Gators with 33 kills on .311 hitting and 24 digs across the nine sets. The outside hitter began the day with a double-double of 15 kills on .353 hitting and 11 digs against SUNY Potsdam (0-2). She followed up with 18 kills on. 275 hitting and 13 digs in the comeback road triumph. Gerkman registered 45 kills, 3.46 per-set, on .266 hitting, and 30 digs, 3.31 per-set this weekend.
Junior setter Cassidy Weiher (Aurora, CO/Cherokee Trail/Southern Maine) contributed a combined nine kills, 34 assists, six aces, and 19 digs, while freshman libero Emma Curry (Goodyear, AZ/Estrella Foothills) elevated 37 opponent attacks and aced five serves.
In the opener, RSC totaled six blocks to hold SUNY Potsdam to a .047 attack percentage, including -.051 in the second set. Junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) topped the Bears with 10 kills.
SUNY Plattsburgh (1-2) received double-digit kills from three different players in the nightcap.
RSC (2-1) is back in action on Friday night at Union.
Gator Bites with Papa John's: RSC made its first appearance in the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament last fall…Seven players return this season, including: senior middle hitter Aniyah Kelley (Newcastle, DE/William Penn) and Gerkman…Cummings, now in her third season at the helm of the Gators, added nine newcomers to this year's squad...Gerkman registered 45 kills, 3.46 per-set, on .266 hitting, and 30 digs, 3.31 per-set this weekend...Curry accumulated 46 digs and nine aces across the three matches.
