Sage falls at Old Westbury, 95-75
The Gators wrapped the program's first NCAA Division III season with a number of team highs along the way.
Old Westbury, NY--- The Sage Colleges' men's basketball team closed the program's first NCAA Division III season on Saturday as the Gators faced SUNY-Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference game on the road. Old Westbury triumphed 95-75 in the contest Sage wraps the remarkable season with a 7-18 overall record with a 5-15 record in conference play. The Panthers sewed up the top seed in the upcoming 2010 Skyline Conference Tournament after going 17-3 in the league and standing at 19-6 overall.
For the second time in as many games, rookie forward Mervin Springer (Copiague, NY/Copiague) as he added a team-high effort with 22 points. For the week, Springer added 49 points in two games to average 24.5 ppg
Rookie forward Matt Farbotko (Rouses Point, NY/Northeastern Clinton) added 17 points with six rebounds. The performance was the 17th straight double-double effort for Farbotko, who wraps the year as the program's high scorer with 351 points and 179 rebounds to lead the team. He averaged 14.0 points with 7.2 rpg and shot a team-high 54.1% from the floor.
Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) added 10 points after hitting a pair of three-pointers in the game. He finishes the season with 25 three-pointers which was third highest on the squad this year. Rookie guard Jeff Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia Glenville) added seven points, with five rebounds and five assists and three steals. Stopera racked up 103 assists with 61 steals to lead the squad, while freshman forward Marcus Hunter (Ridge, NY/Longwood) led with 55 blocks this year, which leads the Gators and the league.
