Men's volleyball team sweep CMSV with 3-0 win on Thursday night
Riverdale, NY--- The Sage Colleges' men's volleyball team travelled to the College of Mt. St. Vincent for a Skyline Conference match with the Dolphins. The Gators tallied a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-13, 25-19) and improve to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the league. CMSV drops to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the league. The Gators are riding a three-match win streak.
Sage's sophomore Dylan Krowicki (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) led the Gators with his 10 kills and seven digs and hit .368. He also lifted seven digs and recorded a block.
Junior middle hitter Spencer Hilland (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem Central) tallied nine kills with four digs and hit .333 to go along with four digs and four total blocks.
Sage's junior setter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) racked up 28 setting assists with four digs. Kyle Ray handed out 28 assists to lead Sage and also lifted four digs. Sophomore Scott Fitzgerald (Hudson Falls, NY/Queensbury) also had a strong night with six kills, six digs and three total blocks.
The Dolphins struggled to string any points together in the opening stanza and saw the visitors pull in front 5-2 after a Scott Fitzgerald winner. The Dolphins would battle back in the set and knot the score at 15-15 after a Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) kill, but saw the Gators close the frame on a 10-3 run to jump in front 1-0.
Sage hit an impressive .333 in the first set, committing just a pair of errors in 21 total attacks. The Dolphins hit .088 and finished with two more kills then Sage but with six more attack errors.
The Gators took control of the second set in the early going and built a 5-0 lead after three straight Mount Saint Vincent attack errors. The Dolphins would never recover from the slow start and Sage closed the set with the last six points to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Although the visitors hit just .200 in the second frame, the Mount committed 14 errors and recorded just six kills. The Dolphins also recorded a side out percentage of just 29 in falling to the 0-2 deficit.
Mount Saint Vincent came out strong in the third set and quickly jumped in front 5-1 keyed by three kills from Ecock. The Dolphins would hold onto the lead until Sage put together a 4-1 run to even the score at 9-9 following a Mount Saint Vincent attack error.
The Dolphins' last lead would come at 10-9 after a Sage service error before the visitors used a 7-3 spurt to jump in front 16-13. The Gators would go on to score six of the final nine points of the set to earn their second win over the Dolphins this season.
Sage hit a blistering .500 as a team in the third set, putting away 13 kills and committing just a pair of errors. The Dolphins also totaled 13 winners in the set, but hit .207 as a unit.
Overall on the night, Sage hit .338 as a team and committed just nine errors in 68 attacks. The Gators also lifted 29 digs to 23 for the Mount and held and big edge in total team blocks at 8-4.
The Gators return to action on February 24-25 competing at the Bard College Raptor Invitational. Sage will face SUNY-IT at 4 p.m. and Lasell College at 8 p.m. on Friday in pool play.
