Gators make it two in a row with 69-56 win over Poly
Albany, NY--- The Sage Colleges men's team hosted the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly on Tuesday evening in the Kahl Center. The Skyline Conference contest was the first of the new year for both teams that have been idol since early December. By night's end, Sage tallied their second straight conference win with a 69-56 victory to improve to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the Skyline Conference, while NYU-Poly drops to 0-9 and 0-6 in the league.
After missing all of the 2010 half of the season, Sage's sophomore forward Matt Farbotko (Rouses Point, NY/Northeastern Clinton) returned on Tuesday. The 2009-2010 Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year, Farbotko opened his sophomore season with nearly a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Sage led 39-30 at the break as senior Lamont Garland (Albany, NY/Colonie) added eight of his team-high 14 points in the first half. Farbotko and senior Derick Faragon (Rotterdam Junction, NY/Schenectady) each had seven first half points as Sage shot 48.6% from the floor and hit half of their three-point baskets. By game's end, Faragon had 13 points for the Gators.
NYU-Poly's junior guard Eddie Johnson (Queens, NY/Bronx Science) had eight points in the first half and was 2-2 from three-point range, while junior guard Eddie Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY/Pleasant Valley) hit two three pointers and had six first half point. Junior center Alexander Westphal (Port Washington, WI/Port Washington) had six points, eight boards and four blocks in the first stanza for the Fighting Blue Jays. Johnson finished with 14 points, while senior guard Anthony Mottola (Brooklyn, NY/Edmund Prep) added 13 points. Westphal and senior forward Jason Buckner (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) each had 11 rebounds on the night.
Sage returns to action on January 6 hosting Maritime College at 8 p.m. in the Kahl Center in a Skyline Conference game, while NYU-Poly will host Mt. St. Mary College that same evening at 7 p.m. in a league contest.
