DeMarinis and Donk's heroics not enough as Gators fall at MCLA

The Sage Colleges women's basketball team traveled to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Friday night for a non-conference game. The Trailblazers picked up the 87-81 win to improve to 13-7 overall, while Sage drops to 8-12.

MCLA was able to tally the win down the stretch after the Gators rallied from being down 11 points (72-61, 6:36). Sage's junior Liz Donk (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) tied the game with her three-pointer at 3:42 (74-72) and helped Sage hold the Trailblazers in check before they overtook them with a jumper by sophomore Alie Drobrovoic (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) at 2:30 (76-74) to break the tie and help her team to the win as they did not relinquish the lead.

MCLA led 37-34 at the break and racked up the home win as three players finished in double digit scoring on the night. Sophomore forward Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, NY/Cooperstown) led her team with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while junior guard Molly Broda (Southampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic) netted 21 points after tallying 16 points in the second half to lead her squad to the victory.

Junior guard Jade Prickett (Westhampton, MA/Hampshire Regional) added 12 points and nine rebounds as well in the contest.

Sage had two players explode on the night as senior guard Carlin DeMarinis (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) added 26 points after netting 20 second half points. DeMarnis tied her own school-mark as she hit seven three-point field goals in the game. She was 5-5 from three-point range in the second half and finished as the team's co-high scorer with junior Liz Donk (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) who tallied a career-high 26 points as well for Sage. Donk hit 11-of-20 field goal attempts and added six assists.

Junior Jessica Byerwalters (Coeymans Hollow, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) added a double-double as she racked up 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Gators.  

Sage returns to action on Sunday, February 7 when they travel to New York City to face Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University in a 1 p.m. contest to be held on the campus of Baruch College.
