Sage romps in home opener
Albany, NY---The Sage College women's basketball team played the program's first contest in the Kahl Campus Center and were the opening act in the first women's and men's basketball doubleheader. Sage would cruise to a 79-50 win to earn the first win on the 2009-2010 campaign. With the win, Sage is now 1-1 overall, while SVC drops to 0-1 on the young season.
Sage would own a 62-27 lead at the break as freshman Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) and sophomore Kelsey Frament (Waterford, NY/Catholic Central) each led the Gators with 12 points. Sage would shoot an impressive 54.3% from the floor in the first stanza as they made 25-64 from the floor and 83.3% from the line (10-12).
By game's end, Hackett would finish with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while junior forward Jessica Byerwalters (Coeymans Hollow, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkink) contributed 17 points for the Gators.
Senior forward Amber Muir (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) netted 12 points and six rebounds off the bench for Sage, which was held to just 17 second half points.
SVC's sophomore guard Joa Claircius (Clermont, FL/East Ridge) paced the Mountaineers with her 18 points, while handing out six assists. Junior Kiara Bates (Washington, DC/Calvin Coolidge) and junior forward Tiarra Hall (Washington, DC/Calvin Coolidge) each hauled down eight rebounds for the SVC team.
Sage returns to action on Friday, November 20 and 21 travelling to Buffalo State College to compete in the Tip-Off Tournament. Sage plays on Friday, November 20 taking on the host Bengals of Buffalo State College in a 3 p.m. contest on Friday, while Saturday's consolation and championship games are slated for noon and 2 p.m. Southern Vermont College will compete this same weekend at the University of Massachusetts-Boston Tip-Off Tournament facing Framingham State College in the7:30 p.m. contest on Friday.
