Dolphins Down Sage For First Home Win Of The Season
Koerner nails five triples, Mocanu hands out six assists
Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent
Women’s Basketball team picked up its first home win of the
season with a 69-58 triumph over Sage on Tuesday night. Senior
Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) finished with five three point
field goals on her way to a game-high 21 points and sophomore Jen
Mocanu (Middletown, N.J.) posted a career best six assists.
Sage jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead in the first 4:07 of play,
before Mount Saint Vincent rallied with a 14-4 run to take the lead
18-17 with 5:49 left before the half. Sage would grab the lead back
on an Amanda Muir jumper with 3:33 left in the period, but Koerner
nailed a three on the ensuing possession to give the Mount the lead
for good in the contest.
Over the final 3:12 of the first half the Mount out scored the
Gators 6-0 and continued the run into the second half to pull in
front 35-23 on a fast break bucket from Koerner. Sage would cut its
deficit to eight on a triple from Carlin DeMarinis with 12:41 left
in the contest, but the Dolphins responded with a 13-1 spurt to
jump in front by 20 with just over eight minutes to play.
The Gators (4-6, 2-3 Skyline) mounted one last charge at the
Dolphins, using a 9-0 run to pull within eight with 1:38 to play.
Amanda Crans started the rally with a triple and the Gators used
four free throws to whittle away at the deficit.
The Dolphins used a pair of baskets from Ashley Ruiz (Carmel, N.Y.)
in the closing minutes to secure the win, their second straight
after dropping two in a row.
For the game neither team shot better then 36-percent, with the
Dolphins converting 35.7-percent for the contest and Sage shooting
at a 29-percent clip. The teams combined for 13 three point field
goals, with the Mount posting nine. Both squads also struggled from
the free-throw line as Mount Saint Vincent went 10-24 and Sage
finished 18-30.
Koerner led all scorers with her 21 points on 8-18 shooting overall
and 5-12 shooting from long range. She also chipped in with four
steals and four rebounds. Mocanu and Lauren Percodani (Staten
Island, N.Y.) also finished in double figures with 10 and 14 points
respectively. Mocanu also finished with six rebounds and a
steal.
Sage was led by Kara Hackett who finished with a double-double on
17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She was joined in
double-figures by Jessica Byerwalters who posted 10 points to go
along with nine rebounds. Elizabeth Donk posted a team-high five
assists.
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 6-4 overall on the season and
to 3-1 in league play. After a day off on Wednesday the Dolphins
will travel to St. Joseph’s-L.I. for their second of three
games this week. Tip-off with the Golden Eagles is set for 7:00
p.m.
Post Game Notes: Brianna Mooney played a career-high six minutes
and posted a career-high four points…The Dolphins, who rank
tied for first in the league in free throw percentage, shot just
41.7-percent from the free-throw line…It was the 111th game
with a three point field goal for Mount Saint Vincent.
