Gators sweep tri-match action
Albany, NY---- The Sage Colleges men's volleyball team hosted Kean University and Elmira College on Saturday in the Kahl Center. The first match saw Sage triumph, 3-1 over Kean. While Elmira topped Kean 3-1 in the middle contest. Sage needed five sets, but pulled off the home win over Elmira, 3-2. Sage improves to 4-5 on the season.
Against Kean, Sage dropped the first set, 25-21, but came back to win three straight, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20. For For the Gators, freshman opposite Ryan Wilkins (Ballston Lakes, NY/Shenendehowa) had 12 kills with five blocks, while sophomore setter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) racked up 41 setting assists.
Junior middle hitter Spencer Hilland (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem) had 18 kills with two blocks and a pair of digs. Sophomore Jake Douty (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) chipped in with nine kills and three blocks, while rookie libero Matt Bynon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) added 18 digs.
Against Elmira, the match went five sets as the Soaring Eagles won the first set 29-25. Sage took the second set 25-13 to even play, and fell behind as they dropped the third set, 25-17. Sage took the next two, 26-24 and 15-11.
Hilland led the Gators with his 14 kills and nine blocks, while Douty added 12 kills and three more blocks. Wilkins had three aces with six blocks and 10 kills in the contest, while Bynon contributes 21 digs. Ray added to his team-leading total of setting assists as he had 44 with a pair of blocks.
In the Kean-Elmira match, Elmira topped the Cougars 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-16, 25-21).
