Gators split results on Sunday at SUNY-IT Invitational
Utica, NY---- The Sage Colleges men's volleyball team wrapped action on Sunday at the two-day Wildcat Invitational at SUNY-IT. Sage topped Hilbert College in their first match, 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21), but dropped the final match to Bard College, 3-0 (25023, 25-19, 25-21). Sage stands at 2-3 on the young season.
Against Hilbert Sage's junior co-captain and middle hitter Spencer Hilland (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem Central) led the team with his 19 kills and four blocks. Sophomore co-captain Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), a 2010 Skyline Conference Second Team honoree, added 36 setting assists with two blocks.
Rookie libero Matt Bynon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) added 20 digs for the Gators in the match, while freshman Ryan Wilkins (Ballston Lakes, NY/Shenendehowa) added 10 kills with four blocks.
In the second match of the tournament, the Gators dropped a tough decision to Skyline Conference foe, Bard College, the 2010 conference champions. Hilland added 12 kills for Sage with another four blocks. Wilkins connected for eight kills with two blocks for Sage. Ray added another 32 setting assists, while Bynon added nine digs. Sophomore Jake Douty (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) chipped in with seven kills.
Hilland earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for his play.
Sage returns to action on February 1 travelling back to SUNY-It, but this time will face the Wildcats in a dual match commencing at 7 p.m.
