Bynon national digs leader; Sage saluted in national stats rankings
Albany, NY--The Sage Colleges men's volleyball team continues to rank among the national leaders in several statistical categories. With the release of the fifth NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Statistics for the 2011 season, Gator rookie libero Matt Bynon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) remains the national leader in digs as he is first in the country with his 3.94 per set average. He has 252 digs in 64 sets. He has been atop the national leader board now in three of the five statistical releases this season.
Sophomore setter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) is also among the national leaders as he has 540 setting assists, good enough for an 8.71 per set average which is 21st best in the country.
Rookie opposite Ryan Wilkins (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) is 20th in hitting percentage with a .303 average. He has 157 kills thus far in 61 sets played for the Gators and earned an additional selection to the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll for his play last week.
Sage's junior middle hitter Spencer Hilland (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem Central) was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week for his play in helping the Gators to a 2-0 week. He had 4.5 kills per set on the week with 1.5 digs, 0.67 blocks and had a .340 hitting percentage last week. He has played in 43 sets thus far with a team-leading 172 kills, 67 digs and 41 blocks.
As a team, Sage is also among the national statistical leaders for Division III. Sage ranks 14th with their 2.07 blocks per set average as they have a combined 171 blocks. Sage stands at 11-8 overall on the year, adding to a new high-water mark for wins in a season for the second-year varsity program and is now 19th in win percentage (0.579). The Gators sport a team hitting percentage of .207, which is 20th best. They also rank 25th with their 10.53 kills per set average and 9.70 setting assists per set average. The Gators are also 28th with 9.20 digs per set as well.
Sage returns to action on March 15 travelling to Bard College for a Skyline Conference match as they face the league's defending tournament champions.
