ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College commenced Empire 8 Conference play with a hard-fought 2-1 home win against SUNY Brockport.
The Gators (4-1-0/1-0-0 E8) overcame playing with only ten-men for the final 49:00 to pick up the three points.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team for the way they believed after going a man down," said Head Coach Amir Pasic. "We stayed in our flow state, stayed the course, and believed that all we needed was one chance if we committed to defending well. In the end the chance came, we defended well, and got a hard earned result."
Sophomore Logan Diebold (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) factored into both RSC tallies. In the 33rd minute, the defender kicked off the scoring by heading home a cross from junior midfielder Ammar Singaporewala (Loudonville, NY/Shaker).
Following the RSC red card, SUNY Brockport (1-3-1/0-1-0 E8) took advantage just 43 seconds later to knot the Conference matinee off of a corner kick.
Even before the send-off, the pitch was strongly tilted in favor of the Golden Eagles, as shots were 10-1 at the half and 32-2 overall. The visitors also held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Despite the uphill climb, RSC looked for its opportunity, which came in the 55th minute. Diebold, voted third-team All-Conference as a rookie, took a free kick from over the midfield line, which bounced off the head of a SUNY Brockport defender into the net.
Freshman goalkeeper Mateja Milutin (Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia/The Kiski School) stopped eight Golden Eagle shots to get the victorious decision (3-1-0).
Looking ahead, the Gators go on the road for the first time this autumn, visiting MCLA on Tuesday afternoon.
