Gators picked to finish second in race for 2012 Skyline Conference Golf Crown
New York, NY---– Farmingdale State has been selected to win its fifth consecutive Skyline Conference Men's Golf Championship in voting conducted by the league's seven head coaches. The Rams earned six first-place votes and amassed 36 points, while 2011 runner-up The Sage Colleges received one first-place vote and 31 overall points. St. Joseph's-L.I. placed third with 25 points, followed by Purchase (21), NYU-Poly (13) and Old Westbury (13), and Yeshiva (8).
Farmingdale State returns juniors Rich Kelly and Adam Larkin, who finished second and fourth, respectively, at the 2011 Skyline Championship. Larkin won four events last spring and was the Rams' top finisher (+10) at the 2012 NCAA Championship.
Sage returns five letterwinners from the 2011-2012 team, which captured three first place finishes last season and posted the young program's best finish at the Skyline Conference Championship. Last year's Gators also were the recipients of the conference's Sportsmanship Award. The Gators under the direction of Luke Scala took home the runner-up trophy in just their fourth season as a varsity program. Sage carded a 631 for the event on rounds of 309-322 and finished as the runner-up in the tournament.
Among the top Gators expected to add to the success is junior Zach Sullivan (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Lake) who finished with a 158 and took honor seventh place and a spot on the second team at the league championship a year ago.
The 2012 Skyline Conference Men's Golf Championship will be held October 21-22 at the Bethpage State Park Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
