Women's lacrosse drops season opener to Wesley.
Sage's women's lacrosse team opened their 2010 campaign on the road on Tuesday.
Dover, DE----The Sage Colleges’ women’s lacrosse team opened the 2010 season on Tuesday on the road. Sage travelled to Wesley College for a non-conference match with the Wolverines. Sage jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the contest, but by game’s end it would be the Wolverines triumphing, 18-4. With the win, Wesley improves to 3-1 overall, while Sage drops to 0-1 on the young season.
Wesley’s freshman midfielder Meggan Apgar (Smyrna, DE/St. Thomas More) tallied five goals and helped her team to the win as they led 14-4 at the half and held Sage scoreless in the second stanza. Joining Apgar with an impressive offensive showing were freshman midfielder Chelsea Buttacavoli (Brick, NJ/Marlboro) and sophomore midfielder Mia Brocco (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) as they each netted three goals and an assist.
Sage’s sophomore attacker Erica Fitzgerald (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) led the way for the Gators as she added a goal and assist, while junior Gabrielle Piccione (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham), senior Christina Gray (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), and senior co-captain Jessica Hankle (Wyantskill, NY/Averill Park) all tallied a single goal in the contest.
Head Coach Andrea Hanley said of the team’s opening performance, “They certainly had some great moments in the game and this will be a building block as we look to learn and grow from as the season progresses.”
Wesley’s freshman goalie rookie goalie Alyssa Batty (Chalfonte, PA/Central Bucks West) picked up the win as she started the game, and played the first half allowing just four goals with a pair of saves. She was relieved at the half by freshman Amanda Hudson (Frederica, DE/St. Thomas More) who had four saves in 30 minutes of work with no goals allowed. Sage’s freshman goalie Courtney Reed (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) recorded 10 saves in her collegiate debut.
Sage returns to action on Thursday, March 11 when they face Misericordia College on the road at 3 p.m.
