Faragon and Lanoue combine for 41 points, but Sage falls to St. Joe's, 93-85
The men's hoops team nearly pulled off a great home win on Saturday, but fell in the final minutes to the Eagles.
Albany, NY---The Sage Colleges men's basketball team hosted the Eagles of St. Joseph's College on Saturday afternoon in the Kahl Center. The Eagles racked up a 93-85 win to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference. Sage falls to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
St. Joseph's led 48-36 at the half and the Gators would cut a 26-point lead (76-50, 11:56) to just eight points in the final minute of play, but were unable to pull off the upset as time expired.
The Eagles were led by five different players who finished in double-digit scoring on the day, while junior guard Olivier Laurent (Amityville, NY/St. Anthony's) as he had 22 points with six assists and three steals. Junior forward Vincent Russo (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) racked up a double-double as he had 15 points with 12 rebounds in the contest. Junior forward Steven Velazquez (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) netted 21 points for St. Joe's with six rebounds and four blocked shots.
Sage's senior forward Derick Faragon (Rotterdam Junction, NY/Schenectady) tied his season-high as he had 22 points and finished with a game-high 13 rebound en route to another double-double. Junior guard Pat Lanoue (Troy, NY/Hoosic Valley Central) erupted for his second straight career-high performance after earning a starting role. Lanoue tallied 19 points with nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Jeff Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia Glenville) finished with 15 points, tying his career-high as well and handed out seven assists in the game.
