Marcy, NY - The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team travelled to SUNY-IT on Friday to compete in the two-day Wildcat Invitational. Sage dropped the first match of the night, falling to the Wildcats of SUNY-IT, 3-2. The Gators then fell 3-0 at the hands of Rochester Institute of Technology. The Gators are now 12-4 on the season and will return to action on Saturday facing Cazenovia College and Wells College in the final day of the event.
Against SUNY-IT, Sage fell in a five-set marathon, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-9. For the Gators sophomore Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill Richmondville) lead Sage with 10 kills and 11 digs for another double-double. She also had three block assists in the contest.
Rookie Kelsey Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) added seven kills for the Gators with three digs. Sage's junior setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) connected on 30 setting assists with eight digs and an ace.
Sage's libero, sophomore Katelyn Drollette (Cadyville, NY/Saranac) recorded seven digs in the match.
Against RIT, Sage fell 3-0 to the Tigers (13-6), (25-18, 25-22, 25-17). Cooney tallied 21 setting assists in the nightcap with 11 digs. She has now surpassed the 1,900 career setting assists, a plateau that has been achieved by only two others in Sage's women's volleyball history. Cooney has 1,913 career setting assists.
Putriment picked up 10 kills in the match, while Drollette added 11 digs. Kelsey Ray had five kills with eight digs and an aces for the Gators.
