Gators' win streak comes to an end as Red Dragons beat Sage; Team rebounds with 3-2 win over Utica
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Oneonta opens the Union Invitational with a win over The Sage Colleges in straight sets at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday evening. The loss for Sage ended the team's eight-match win streak. Sage then faced Utica College in the final match of the evening and returned to the winning track beating the Pioneers, 3-2. Sage is now 9-1 on the season.
Sage started the opening set well, but they fell to the Red Dragons, marking the team's first loss in nine visits to the court this fall. After Oneonta winning the opening set in a close 27-25 match, the Red Dragons pulled away in the following two matches, which included a 25-9, win in the second set. In the third match, the Gators made it a close battle being deadlocked at 7-7. However, Oneonta overcame the early tie and ran away with the final set at 25-15.
Kacy Boburka led Oneonta with 11 kills and three service aces. In addition, Erica Darpino and Brittany Calvello had 11 kills and six kills, respectively.
Sage was led by sophomore Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill Richmondville) with seven kills. Rookie Kelsey Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horsheads) also contributed with six of the Gator's 25 kills in the match. Junior setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) tallied 21 assists while sophomore defensive specialist Katelyn Drollette (Cadyville, NY/Saranac) led the team defensively with 10 digs.
Against Utica College, the Gators trailed 2-0 before taking the third and fourth set and winning the contest with a victory having won the final three sets of the match. Sage won the match of the night, beating the Pioneers, 3-2 (14-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-7, 15-12).
Each team exchanged points early as it was close early in the first set. In the middle of the set, the Pioneers gained momentum as Utica was able to string a 6-1 run to take the first set 25-14.
Sage however remained willing to battle as the Gators kept it close early in the second set. Once again however, Utica began to pull-away in the middle of set with a 9-0 run to take the two-game advantage in the third set 25-16.
The Gators led early in the third set with a 6-2 advantage. Sage continued their momentum to extend their lead to 11-3 and maintained an eight point advantage to 18-10with a well-rounded effort by the Gators. However, Utica was able to cut down the lead to three, giving the Gators a 19-16 edge. However, the Gators found their rhythm again and put away the remaining points to win the third set 25-22.
Sage's momentum continued in the third set as the Gators tallied a 10-1 to open. Each team began to exchange blows as the Gators inched closer to force a fifth set with an 18-6 advantage. The Gators were able to force a fifth set with a 25-7 win.
The Pioneers were able to get the early advantage with a 7-3 lead in the fifth set. At the switch, Utica's lead was cut in half to 8-6. Sage was able to balance the score and take their first lead in the fifth set 9-8. After a vicious rally by both squads, the Gators prevailed to gain the two-point advantage. However, the Pioneers battled back to string four points to lead
12-10. After the timeout by Sage, leveled the score again at 12 and tallied three more points to take the final set 15-12.
Pacing the team in the nightcap was rookie Kelsey Ray with 13 kills, while freshman Mickey Mango (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) added 11 kills. Putriment finished with 9 kills and 24 digs, while Drollette racked up 20 digs. Cooney connected for 43 setting assists as well in the action.
Sage returns to action on Saturday and will face Skidmore College at Noon and Brockport State at 2 p.m.
