Cooney tapped as MVP, while Drollette earns All-Tourney honors in Sage sweep
Chicopee, MA--The Sage College's women's volleyball posted a perfect performance with a sweep of the competition at the Third Annual Elms College Blazer Invitational. Sage downed the host Elms College on Saturday, 3-0 (2511, 25-11, 25-19) and improve to 3-0 on the season.
Rookie middle hitter Mickey Mango (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) added 10 kills and three solo blocks to pace the Gators. Twin rookie sisters, Kera and Kelsey Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horsehead) were also impressive as Kera added 6 kills and 7 digs, while Kelsey added 5 kills with 2 aces.
Sophomore Jilllian Schwab (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville Manlius) had five kills and five digs for Sage.
Sophomore co-captain Katelyn Drollette (Cadyville, NY/Saranac) led the team with her 13 digs, while junior co-captain Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) added 24 setting assists with 5 digs with 3 kills.
Cooney earned tournament MVP honors for her play that included 73 setting assists, 8 kills and 26 digs. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Drollette who finished the tournament with two serving aces and 49 digs while adding a .884 reception percentage for the three matches.
The Gators will host SUNY-Cobleskill in the team's home opener on Wednesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. in the Neff Center in Troy, NY.
