ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College fell in both ends of Wednesday's Empire 8 Conference home doubleheader against Utica.
In the opener, the Gators were clipped 6-5 in nine innings.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, junior Amber Banas (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) got RSC within one with a pinch-hit RBI single. Junior infielder Hannah Smith (Clifton Park, NY/Clifton Park/Saint Rose) followed with an RBI single to send the contest to extras.
In the ninth, designated player Abigail Sacks blasted a homer onto the adjacent lacrosse field in left to put the visitors ahead 6-4. A Smith RBI single halved the RSC deficit in the bottom half.
Freshman infielder Ava Heffner (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the first game.
Utica (14-6/9-1 E8), now winners of six in-a-row, used a five-run fifth to take the second game 8-2.
Sophomore infielder Annalise Tyler (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) paced the Gators in the nightcap by going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI to go 5-for-8 with three RBI across the two contests.
RSC (7-17/3-5 E8) is slated to continue E8 play on Friday afternoon at Elmira.
