Gators Play Through Weather to Pick Up Non-Conference Win

ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College Field Hockey battled through heavy rain for most of the first half against Manhattanville on Wednesday and picked up a 3-1 victory over the Valiants.
The Gators (3-3/1-1 E8) scored two early goals, one from freshman midfielder Catherine Newkirk (Marathon, NY/Marathon) and the other from sophomore forward Skyler Van Wormer (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland/SUNY Oneonta).
As the second period got underway, the rain started coming down even harder, and the officials put the game into a delay for just over half an hour.
The rain stopped and the field drained, and play resumed.
Manhattanville (3-6) got its lone goal in the third period off the stick of Lulu LePage.
Newkirk capped off the scoring in the fourth finding the back of the cage off a corner.
Cheyanne Zobel (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) tallied a pair of assists in the victory.
"We are really coming together as a unit and playing with and for one another," shared Head Coach Carissa Warren. "The season is far from over so I'm excited to keep growing!"
Looking ahead, the Gators continue their home stand with an Empire 8 Conference matchup against Alfred on Saturday.
