Alexa Veeder racks up 12 goals as Gators down Elms, 19-13
Chicopee, MA--- The Sage Colleges' women's lacrosse team travelled to the Elms College on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference match. Sage's junior captain Alexa Veeder (Earlton, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) exploded for a school-record 12 goal performance as she helped the Gators to the first win of the season as they beat the Trailblazers, 19-13. Sage produced a number of program high-water marks in the contest and stands at 1-3 on the year. Elms drops to 0-2.
The victory marks the first of his career for Sage's first-year head coach Pete Stapleton and snaps an 18-game losing streak as well.
Sage led 12-7 at the break as Veeder had eight first-half goals. Veeder now has a team-best 19 goals this season, which is just one shy of tying the single-season goal scoring record set in 2009 by Brianna Thompson (20 goals)on the afternoon. Veeder finished with a program-record 14 points in the action on Saturday after erupting for 12 goals with two assists. She broke the single-season point record just four games into the 2012 season as she leads the Gators with 22 points on 19 goals and three assists, one more than the mark set by Thompson in 2009 with 21 points.
Sage senior Ginelle Butler (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) added four goals to help lift the Gators. Butler, who opened the season as Sage's all-time career point and goal scoring leader has 35 goals and 39 career points in 36 games played.
In goal for the Gators was sophomore Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) as she made finished with seven saves and the win in net.
Elms's Alysha Parsons had nine saves in the afternoon with 19 goals allowed.
For the Trailblazers Kaitlyn Harrington and Emily Walsh finished with three goals apiece, while Harrigton added an assist for four points in the match.
Sage will be back in action on March 21, when they host New England College at Union College's College Park Field at 6 p.m.
