ALBANY, NY –The Sage College's department of athletics gathered to recognize and honor the outstanding performances of the 2015-2016 year with the naming of the athletic award winners for the 15 varsity athletic teams. In addition to awarding the Gator Award, for the Most Outstanding Player, the department also named the 2015-2016 Female and Male Athletes of the Year, the Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which is given to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average, and the Aggie Stillman Perseverance Award.
The Sage Colleges' men's cross country competitor, senior performer Juan Reyes-Alvarez (Latham, NY/Shaker) was named the Gator of the Year.
Head coach Jim Bowles said of Reyes-Alvarez, ""A quiet leader that led by example, Juan has earned All-Skyline Team honors every year at Sage." Bowles added, "He is the current record holder in cross country as well as a member of our outdoor track and field team. He has had an amazing career here at Sage, and he has set the bar high for all runners in the future."
Among his many performances this fall in cross country, Reyes-Alvarez became the program's first four-time All-Conference performer. The senior received Skyline First-Team honors with a fifth place finish at the Skyline Conference meet with a time of 29:10.3. Reyes-Alvarez recorded a career best at the Bard Raptors Invitational with a time of 26:59. He finished in the 10% of runners in every race this season except two, including a third place finish at the Steven Warde Invitational (SUNY-Cobleskill). Reyes-Alvarez was named the Skyline Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice over the course of his career.
He is majoring in business at Sage and is Dean's List student having also earned acclaim as a three-time Sage Scholar-Athlete honoree. Active on campus, he is the president and founder of the Green Club. He is now the only Sage student-athlete honored four times during their career as a Gator of the Year honoree in any sport.
