Old Westbury Spoils Sage's Senior Day
Troy, NY----The Sage Colleges softball team hosted the Panthers of SUNY-Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Robison Field. Old Westbury would win both contests, 7-2 and 10-1 and stand at 18-16 overall and 8-6 in the Skyline Conference. Sage falls to 8-26 overall and 3-11 in the league.
In between the two games, Sage honored senior short stop Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) in conjunction with Senior Day.
Game #1 Old Westbury 7, Sage, 2
Old Westbury’s freshman Nicole Petrucci (Locust Valley, NY/Locust Valley) was 4-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI to lead the Panthers, while freshman pitcher Alyssa Clancy (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) was 3-4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles at the plate to help her effort on the mound. She collected the complete game victory to improve to 12-3 after working seven innings with just two earned runs off four Sage hits and struck out eight batters.
Sage’s rookie catcher Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany Central) had a solo home run for the Gators, while Jones was 1-3 with a run scored and her 36th career double in the contest.
Sage’s rookie pitcher Gabriella Skillen (Milford, NY/Milford Central) took the complete game loss to drop to 6-12 on the year. She fanned two and entered her name into the Gator single-season record book by days’ end as she appeared in 23 games this year which is tied for 5th best in the Gator single-season record book. She also worked in 115.2 innings this year which is 8th best with 40 strikeouts (8th) and her 14 complete games checks in at No. 8 in the record book.
GAMES #2 OLD WESTBURY 10, Sage 1
Old Westbury exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away from Sage. Petrucci would go 3-4 with two RBIS and three runs scored in the nightcap, while senior outfielder Sherrida Maxwell (Rosedale, NY/Campus Magnet) added a triple and was 2-4 with a pair of RBIS.
Sage’s freshman pitcher Nichole French (Harrisville, NY/Harrisville Central) would last four plus inning for Sage, but not before she connected on a solo home run in the third inning, the first of her career.
Junior Deborah Ciccarelli (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) earned the win to improve to 6-13 after she yielded just one earned run off two hits and fanned five batters.
For the Gators, the day marked the end of a banner career for Kellie Jones. She closes her career with numerous single-game and career marks. Among the many highlights the three-time team captain set were
most doubles in a season (14) and career 36), and most home runs in s season (6). She finishes her career with a .380 average (11th best), after playing in 125 games (3rd) with 376 at bats (2nd), with 143 hits (2nd), 36 doubles (1st), 8 triples (5th), 13 home runs (2nd), with 87 runs scored (2nd), 56 RBIs (7th)and 23 stolen bases (5th). For the 2010 season, Jones batted a team-high .426 with 12 doubles, 2 triples and a team-best 6 home runs, while driving in 17 runs and scoring 24 runs.
