Sage falls to Simmons in season opener in Florida
Clermont, FL----The Sage Colleges softball team opened the new season on Sunday facing Simmons College on their spring training trip as the Gators are competing all week at the National Training Center. The season opener for both Sage and Simmons and the Sharks tallied the 12-1 over the Gators on Sunday afternoon. A year ago, Sage went 7-29, while the Sharks of Simmons College posted a 16-23 campaign. Simmons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning and lead 7-0 before the Gators tallied their lone run of the contest.
At the plate Sage got a double from senior infielder Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) as she was 1-3 on the day. Rookie catcher Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany Central) went 1-2 with a triple and an RBI in her collegiate debut.
Simmons was led by an offensive output that included three triple. Junior Courtney Collier (Dorchester, MA) was 1-4 with a triple and two RBIs for the Sharks, while junior Annie Thompson (Pacifica Palisades, CA) drove in two runs as well.
Sage's sophomore Kristen Knights (Chatham, NY/Chatham) took the loss after seven innings of work with three strikeouts and is now 0-1 on the season. Simmon's senior Sammi Letizio (Windham, NH) picked up the complete game win after fanning 13 Gators in the contest and yielding just one earned run in the game.

The Gators will return to action on Monday, March 8 when they face six-time NCAA Division III champions, The College of New Jersey at 3:30 p.m. Later in the day, Sage will face Northwestern College at 7:30 p.m.
