Sage comes close with St. Joseph's in Skyline action
Bellport, NY----The Golden Eagles of St. Joseph’s College collected a sweep of The Sage Colleges’ softball team in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Martha Avenue Softball complex. SJC’s improves to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the league. Sage drops 0-10 and 0-4 in the conference on the season.
Sage collected 14 hits in the first game, marking the second straight day the Gators bats were hot.
St. Joseph’s College collected the win in the first game as Erica Stark had a game-winning RBI single to left field to break a 5-5 tie in the bottom of seventh inning.
Gators were paced in the contest by junior Allison Bishop (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) as she was 3-4 with an RBI and a double. She was part of a two run sixth inning to help the Gators tie the action in the top of the sixth.
Bishop opened the game with a lead-off single and was driven in by senior short stop Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy), while rookie Nichole French (Harrisville, NY/Harrisville Central) had a two run single to pace the team to a 3-0 lead after their first at-bats. French was 3-3 with a pair of RBIs in the contest.
Sage’s freshman pitcher Gabriella Skillen (Milford, NY/Milford Central) started the game for the Gators and worked four innings, allowing three earned runs off four hits with a strike out and a pair of walks. French came in the game in relief and worked 2.1 innings, yielding an earned run off one hit with a walk and a strikeout. French drops to 0-2 on the year.
St. Joseph’s got the complete game win from Jackie Buturla as she allowed five earned runs of 14 hits with a pair of walks. She stands at 2-2.
St. Joseph’s jumped out to a 7-0 lead through four innings of action. Sage tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore Jennifer Ahearn (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) had a two RBI single and Jones followed up with an RBI single to cap the Gators’ five-hit, three-run inning.
Jones added her second RBI of the game in the top of the seventh inning, but it was not enough as the Golden Eagles were paced by the team’s 16 hits and two homeruns.
Senior Rosemary Flores was 3-4 with four RBIs after she had a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sage’s sophomore pitcher Kristen Knights (Chatham, NY/Chatham) took the loss and is now 0-4 after working 3.2 innings with seven earned runs off 12 hits. French and freshman pitcher Gabriella Skillen (Milford, NY/Milford Central) both worked in relief for the Gators.
Freshman pitcher Gina Moscatelli picked up the complete game win and is now 3-3 after three earned runs off nine hits with a pair of strikeouts.
The Gators will return to action on Tuesday, March 30 when they host SUNY-Cobleskill in a non-conference doubleheader at Robison Field at 3 p.m.
