SUNY-IT Sweeps Gators in non-conference action on Tuesday
Troy, NY----The Sage Colleges softball team hosted the Wildcats of SUNY-IT on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader. SUNY-IT posted a pair of wins (11-1, 6-1) to extend their win streak to 14 games and improve to 19-4 overall, while Sage falls to 0-22.
SUNY-IT’s sophomore Amanda Pratt (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) drove in three runs in the first game as she connected on a solo home run in the top of the seventh. She was 2-4 with a pair of runs scored in the contest and was aided by the play of freshman Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) as she was 1-4 with a pair of RBIs.
For the Gators, senior short stop Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) connected on a double in the bottom of the fourth inning, but a Wildcat double play squashed her efforts. Jones continues to add to her career record as she now has 30 doubles as a Gator.
Sophomore Jennifer Ahearn (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) went deep with a solo home run in the bottom of fifth inning to put the Gators on the scoreboard. The home run was her first of the year and the fifth of her career.
SUNY-IT’s sophomore Juleah Vedder (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) picked up the win after a complete game as she scattered five hits and struck out five on her way to improving to 9-2. Sage’s freshman pitcher Gabriella Skillen (Milford, NY/Milford Central) took the loss after 3.2 innings of work with five earned runs off eight hits with a strikeout and a pair of walks. She falls to 0-9.
The Wildcats scored a run in the top of the first inning as Pratt drove in a run, but Sage was able to get out of the jam and end the inning down, just 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Sage tied the action as Ahearn blasted a double to right center with one out and was driven in by rookie catcher Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany Central).
SUNY-IT would go ahead for good with four runs in the top of the fifth inning as they were paced by a lead-off double by Brognano and by inning’s end, Pratt had driven in a pair and capped a strong day with six RBIs’s.
Sage’s sophomore pitcher Kristen Knights (Chatham, NY/Chatham) worked 4.1 innings in taking the setback after yielding five earned runs off 10 hits and is now 0-8.
SUNY-IT’s junior Meaghan McGurn (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) collect the complete game win, improving to 9-2 after she struck out four for the Wildcats.
