Knights top Sage in tough-fought Skyline DH
Newburgh, NY--The Sage Colleges softball team traveled to Mt. Saint Mary College on Saturday for a pair of Skyline Conference games. The Knights took both games as they needed extra-innings in the first, but triumphed, 3-2. They were victorious in the nightcap with an 8-0 win. MSMC improves to 12-9-1 overall and 5-3 in the Skyline Conference, while Sage drops to 8-13 overall and 4-6 in the league.
Sage returns to action on Sunday hosting NYU-Poly in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Robison Field at 1 p.m.
Game # 1 MSMC 3-2 Sage (8 innings)
MSMC struck first, but the Gators took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning as rookie Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) led off with a single before junior Rachel Smith (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) drove her in with a double. Smith scored after moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a sacrifice fly from rookie catcher Tricia Gaulin (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls).
For the game, Smith was 2-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.
MSCM tied the action in the bottom of the sixth and the two squads played an extra inning that saw the Knights score on an RBI single by Brittany O'Brien.
Sage's sophomore pitcher Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain) worked the complete game, but took the loss to drop to 3-5. She fanned five with just one earned run and now has a team-leading 48 strikeouts this season. Her 48 strikeouts in a season has already vaulted her into the No. 5 spot on Sage's single-season performance list, which is led by Maria DeNovio (72, 2004).
Game # 2 MSMC 8-0 Sage (6 innings)
MSCM's Cailtin Maynes tossed a complete game shutout as she held Sage hitless on the day. She improves to 9-4 on the season.
For the Gators, freshman pitcher Jackie Petteys (Fort Ann, NY/Hartford Central) took the loss after 2.1 innings of work with five earned runs off seven hits. She fanned two but drops to 2-4. Newberg worked three innings in relief and allowed just one earned run off five hits in her ninth outing of the season.
