Albany, NY–The Sage Colleges' men's volleyball team hosted the wildcats of SUNY-Polytechnic in Kahl Gym on Wednesday night in the team's 2016 home opener. The Wildcats collected the 3-0 win (25-11, 25-21, 25-21) to improve to 3-2 on the year, while Sage drops to 0-5.
Sage's sophomore outside hitter Bailey Cecchi (Agawam, MA/Agawam) and sophomore middle hitter Ryan Guyton (Lockport, NY/Lockport) both finished with nine kills each, while Cecchi added six digs and had just two reception errors in 22 attempts. Junior opposite Chris MacArthur (Hillsdale, NY/Taconic Hills) chipped in with six digs, and an ace and was perfect in 18 reception attempts.
Sophomore libero Casey Fitzpatrick (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill) added seven digs with no errors in 17 reception attempts, while rookie outside Zachary Karl (Central Square, NY/Central Square) had three kills with two solo blocks in the action. Rookie setter Austin Laverty (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) also contributed 19 setting assists with two digs for the Gators.
SUNY-Polytechnic's senior middle back A.J. Davids (Hilton, NY/Hilton) paced his squad with an impressive 14 kills with a .360 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Zach Goggin (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) added 30 setting assist with four digs. Freshman outside hitter Max Szuba (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) connected for seven kills with an ace and six digs, while making no errors in his 16 reception attempts. As a team, the Wildcats had a .269 attack percentage and a .957 reception percentage with three aces.
Sage will the Nighthawks of Newbury College on Friday, January 29 at 6 p.m. in Kahl Gym. On Sunday, January 31, Sage will hold a tri-match with Mt. Ida College and Lehman College as the matches are at 11 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in Kahl Gym. In conjunction with the tri-match Sage is holding their Flood the Swamp with White Day and encouraging all fans to wear white and fill the Sage stands with white and possibly win prizes!
