Cooney surpasses 2,000 career setting assists, but Gators fall to MSMC
Albany, NY - The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team hosted the Knights of Mt. St. Mary College on Wednesday night in the Kahl Center in a Skyline Conference match. Both teams opened the action undefeated in conference play and the Knights emerged victorious, 3-1. The win puts MSMC at 11-7 overall and 3-0 in the Skyline Conference. The loss puts Sage at 14-5 overall and 4-1 in the league.
Sage won the first set 25-23, but the Knight took the next three sets, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 to collect the win and remain undefeated in the league.
For Sage, junior setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) connected on 38 setting assists with 17 digs. She became just the third player in Sage's 41-year history of volleyball to surpass the 2,000 career setting assists plateau. She now has 2,007 career setting assists and is No. 3 all-time at Sage.
MSMC's senior outside hitter Mary Ann Raftery (Atlantic Beach, NY/St. John the Baptist) racked up 17 kills and 15 digs for a double-double. She was joined by senior setter Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford), who led the Knights and the match with her 43 setting assists. Sophomore Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Kennedy Catholic) had 14 kills, while freshman libero Jen Gries (Hicksville, NY/Holy Trinity) had 22 digs, while making just one reception error in her 32 attempts for a .969 reception percentage.
For the Gators, sophomore Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill Richmondville) had a double-double with her 19 kills and 34 digs. She was also perfect with no reception errors in her 34 attempts. Sophomore Jillian Schwab (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville Manlius) connected for 10 kills for Sage. Sage's libero, sophomore Katelyn Drollette (Cadyville, NY/Saranac) recorded 22 digs in the match.
Sage returns to action on October 6 hosting a Skyline Conference Tri-Match featuring Maritime College and NYU-Poly in the Kahl Center. Action commences with the first match at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Mt. St. Mary College also hosts a Skyline Conference Tri-Match on Saturday featuring Purchase College and St. Joseph's.
