Martin's career-high 21 points helps Sage triumph in Jumpers for Jacob contest

Troy, NY---The Sage Colleges women's basketball team hosted the Dolphins of Mt. St. Vincent College on Tuesday night in a Skyline Conference game. Sage racked up a 66-56 win to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Skyline Conference, while Mt. St. Vincent drops to 1-6 and 0-4 in the Skyline Conference.

The contest was a fund raiser for Jacob's Angels and Sage will be donating all proceeds, nearly $1,300 from the contest to benefit "Jacob's Angels." Sage's women's basketball program and the athletic department sold commemorative t-shirts at the door as well as taking donations for the fund. In addition, there were halftime contests and events to support, Jacob Mooney, a third grade student in Watervliet, NY, who is fighting cancer, stage two Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma after receiving the diagnosis in late June, 2010. He has been hospitalized several times and receives chemotherapy treatments every two to three weeks.

The Dolphins led 31-29 at the half and forced 19 first half turnovers by the Gators. Sage's rookie forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) led all performers as she netted a career-high 21 points on the night. She had 12 points in the second half and shot a blistering 5-11 from three-point range from three-point range.  Senior forward Jessica Byerwalters (Coeymans Hollow, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) added 14 points, while sophomore forward Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) paced the team with her game-high 11 rebounds, including eight defensive rebounds with two blocks.

Senior Liz Donk (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) had six assists in the game and has moved into the No. 3 spot on the Gators career assist list as she now has 234 as she passed Sheila Clancy (1985-1989) who was third with 231.

For the College of Mt. St. Vincent, freshman guard Sarah Kluth (Lynbrook, NY/St. Mary's) and sophomore guard Andree DeLeon (Flushing, NY/Francis Lewis) chipped in with 14 points each. Rookie guard Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln) added 10 points for the Dolphins, while Kluth was the team's high rebounder with seven caroms and six steals.

Sage returns to action on Thursday, December 9 travelling to Yeshiva University for a Skyline Conference game, which will be held at Hunter College and starts at 6 p.m. CMSV also plays Yeshiva in their next contest on December 16 on the road at 6 p.m.
