Sage falls twice in Skyline Conference openers at Farmingdale

Farmingdale, NY---- The Sage Colleges softball team travelled to Farmingdale State College for the team's Skyline Conference opener. The Rams swept Sage on Saturday, 8-3 and 7-2. The Rams improve to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Sage is now 0-2 in the league and 0-7 overall.
Game # 1 Farmingdale 8-3 Sage
Sage got three doubles and connected on seven hits in the opener. The Gators sent three runs across the plate in the top of the fifth inning and capitalized on three Ram errors. Junior Meghan Welcome (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) added a pair of hits, while junior Rachel Smith (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) added two hits with an RBI. Freshman Chantal Ceragioli (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) added two hits as she added a double. Also connecting on a two-bagger was Welcome and rookie catcher Tricia Gaulin (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls).
Sage's sophomore pitcher Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain) struck out four Rams in 5.1 innings of work, but took the loss as she is 0-3 on the year. Sophomore Gabriella Skillen (Milford, NY/Milford Central) struck out one in two thirds of an inning for the Gators.
Game # 2 Farmingdale 7-2 Sage
Smith made the start for the Gators in the nightcap and suffered the loss after 2.1 innings of work with four earned runs off five hits and a strikeout. She drops to 0-2. Skillen also worked in relief and fanned two batters in her 3.2 innings of work with no runs allowed off six hits.
Offensive leaders for the Gators in the night cap included freshman Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) with a hit and a run scored, while Newberg was 1-2 with an RBI. Skillen added to her performance with a hit as Sage had four singles.
Sage returns to action on Sunday facing SUNY-Old Westbury at noon in a road conference doubleheader.
