Gators advance in Skyline Tournament
Troy, NY----The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team hosted the Panthers of SUNY College at Old Westbury on Wednesday evening in the Neff Athletic Center in the first round of the 2009 Skyline Conference Tournament. Seeded third, Sage would defeat No. 6 seeded Old Westbury, 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-18). With the win, Sage has advanced to the semifinals for the third straight year and now stands at 12-22, while Old Westbury drops to 16-18.
The Gators would combine for 12 team aces on the night in their sweep of the Panthers. Senior Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) racked up 13 kills. Junior Nicole Corbett (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) also had a big night as she had seven kills with a pair of blocks. Junior outside hitter Sarah Peacock (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) added seven kills with four digs, while junior middle hitter Michelle DeNisco (New Hampton, NY/Goshen) added seven kills. Sophomore libero Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Bishop Gibbins) added 10 digs for the Gators.
Sophomore setter Kristina Girodano (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) had 10 setting assists with four digs and two kills for the Panthers. Sophomore outside hitter Tynisha George (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) had six digs with four kills, while junior outside hitter Ashley Greene (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) added three serving aces. Junior Tanaya Vinson (Woodside, NY/William. C. Bryant) added five kills on the night as well.
The Gators advance to the 2009 Skyline Conference semifinals and championship round at top seeded NYU-Poly on Saturday, November 5. Sage will face No. 2 seeded St. Joseph's College at 1:30 p.m. with the winner advancing the championship match at 4:00 p.m.
The Skyline Conference Champion will receive the league's automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Championship. Sage is the league's two-time reigning champion in women's volleyball.
