Sage College drops a heartbreaker in Skyline Conference finals

Brooklyn, NY--The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team traveled to NYU-Poly on Saturday for the championship round of the 2009 Skyline Conference Tournament. Seeded third, Sage would knock off second seeded St. Joseph's College in the semifinals (3-0, 25-16, 25-10, 25-19). The Gators would face top seeded NYU-Poly in the finals of the tournament, but would not retain their championship crown as NYU-Poly was a winner, 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 17-15).

The two-time champions on the league, Sage finishes as the tournament runner-up for the first time in the program's three years in the conference. The Gators would go 13-23 this fall.

Against St. Joseph's, junior middle hitter Nicole Corbett (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) added nine fills with five blocks. Junior outside hitter Sarah Peacock (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) added 12 kills with 10 digs for a double-double. Sophomore libero Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Bishop Gibbins) added 12 digs for the Gators. Wilson wraps the year with 452 digs, which ranks 11th best in school history in a single-season.

Sophomore setter Kristyn Buonincontra (Shelton, CT/Shelton) added 31 setting assists in the match for the Gators.

In a tough-fought championship match, Corbett finished her season with an impressive 19 kills and seven blocks. Already Sage's No. 2 all-time leading blocker, Corbett now has 378 career blocks and added 117 blocks this year, good enough for the No. four spot on the Gators' single-season performances. Corbett also has elevated her career total to 905, which ranks fourth all-time in school career records. Peacock added 10 kills and 24 digs.  Junior middle hitter Michelle DeNisco (New Hampton, NY/Goshen) racked up nine kills with three blocks. Senior Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) racked up 13 digs with nine kills. On her career she now has 668 kills which ranks among the top seventh best in school career efforts.

Buonincontra added 45 setting assists and finishes the year with 847, which ranks seventh best for a single-season effort.
