Sage tallies 7-0 win to earn post-season bid

SAGE TALLIES 7-0 WIN OVER MARITIME TO EARN SKYLINE TOURNAMENT BID

Loudonville, NY---The Sage Colleges women's soccer team hosted Maritime College on Saturday at nearby Siena College in a Skyline Conference match. Sage would collect a 7-0 win to qualify for the upcoming 2009 Skyline Conference tournament, marking the program's third straight post-season appearance. Sage improves to 8-7-1 overall and finishes league play with a record of 5-4, while Maritime drops to 8-10-1 overall and 2-7 in the league.

Sage will now take on Mt. St. Mary College on Tuesday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Newburgh, NY in the first round of the 2009 playoffs.

Sage would jump out to a 5-0 lead at the break as the team's leading scorer, sophomore Rebecca Marszalek (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) tallied what would be the game-winner on a pass from senior Krystal Cozzens (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) at 13:02. By game's end, Marszalek would finish with two goals, elevating her season total to 15 goals, 32 points and five game-winning goals. Cozzens, who was honored before the contest in conjunction with senior day as the Gators' lone senior, added a goal to elevate her season total to six goals and assist. Freshman Grace Collett (Watervliet, NY/Watervliet) added pair of goals as well for the Gators and now has four on the fall.

In goal for the Gators, was Sage's junior goalie Brittany McDonald (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) as she made two saves on the afternoon to earn her fifth solo shutout and Sage's six on the fall. Maritime's rookie goalie Courtney Marietta (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) would make 17 saves on the day in taking the loss for the Privateers.

Sage sponsored a Kickin' for the Cure game to raise awareness of breast cancer at the game. Pink t-shirts were sold, as well as baked goods, a halftime kicking contest was held and players from both teams donned pink hair ribbons, shoe laces and wore special shirts in the warm ups, all in an effort to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund. Fans were encouraged to wear pink on Saturday and did just that as nearly $550 were raised on Saturday.
