Sage drops heartbreaker to Maritime, 4-3
Albany, NY---The Sage Colleges men's soccer team hosted Maritime College on Saturday afternoon in a Skyline Conference match with first-place in the race for the top seed in the upcoming league championship on the line. In a see-saw battle, the Privateers would tally the 4-3 win to claim the top spot in the league after Saturday's action as they improve to 11-7 overall with a 7-2 Skyline Conference record. Sage drops to 7-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the league.
The Gators took a 1-0 lead (12:21) on a misplayed ball that resulted in an own goal for Maritime. Minutes later sophomore defender Chris Anderson (Manorville, NY/East-South Manorville) tied the action with his first goal of the season at 13:29.
Sage's rookie Wesley Finch (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) connected for his third goal of the season on a feed from Scott Jarosz (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick) at 31:57 and gave Sage a 2-1 lead. Maritime tied the score with under two minutes before the break as sophomore Haluk Erdogan (Izmir, Turkey) connected for the first of his two goals in the match at 42:40.
Sage opened the second half with a quick 3-2 lead as freshman Evan Southworth (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) scored on a feed from freshman Chris Peralta (Wyandanch, NY/Martin Luther King, Jr.) at 48:24.
Erdogan provided the tying goal at the 70:44 mark for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The Privateers tallied the game-winner as junior midfielder David Kittinger (Fort Myers, FL/South Fort Myers) connected on a feed from Erdogan at 86:31. The score would hold up as Maritime's senior keeper Harris Papson (Flushing, NY/Francis Lewis) came up with some big saves in the final minutes as Sage had a flurry of shots and attempts in the final few minutes of play.
Papson finished with 10 saves in the match, while Sage's rookie goalie Carmen Volpe (Cohoes, NY/CBA) took the loss in goal after making nine saves.
