Sage's tennis team hosts Knights in final home match of 2011 season
Latham, NY----The Gators of the Sage Colleges hosted the Knights of Mt. St. Mary College in the final regular-season Skyline Conference match for both teams. The Knights tallied a 9-0 win over Sage to earn the win and are now 10-5 overall with a 6-1 record in the conference and have earned the second seed for the 2011 Skyline Conference Tournament, which opens next week. Sage wraps the season with an 0-11 record while going 0-7 in the league.
Sage's sophomore Mackenzie Riley (Albany, NY/Albany) pushed her opponent at first singles to a third-set tie breaker, junior Mike McNicholas (Milton, NY/Marlboro Central). Riley took the first set 7-6 (7-5) and McNicholas took the second set 6-1. In the final set, McNicholas won 7-6 with a 7-2 score in then took the final set, 7-6 (7-2).
Sage's tennis team honored senior team member, Kathryn Saulsbery (Colonie, NY/South Colonie Central) after the match in conjunction with Senior Day. A four-year letterwinner and a three-time team captain for Sage's women's tennis team, Kathryn Saulsbery has also helped the men's tennis program this spring with her play and leadership. This past fall, she joined an exclusive club in her final outing as member of Sage's women's tennis team. Against Yeshiva, Saulsbery went 2-0 on the afternoon. The win in doubles was the 50th of her career. She tacked on her 51st win with a win at No. 2 singles.
She finishes her career on the women's team with a 51-42 record as a Gator. She is just the second women's tennis player in the history of the program to join the 50 win club. She joins the ranks of Sage Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Elizabeth Lawrence Russillo (1998-2001). The two players belong to an exclusive club of women's tennis players at Sage as Lawrence Russillo combined for a record of 73-28 during her time at Sage and Saulsbery went 51-42.
Saulsbery is a four-year class president and has been involved with a number of Sage activities, including the annual Rally event. A tennis coach for 15-Love, Saulsbery is a life science major at Sage and is the daughter of J. Bruce and Deborah Saulsbery and is a former Gator of the Year recipient and was a member of Sage's first women's lacrosse team in 2009.
