Vassar spoils Gators' home opener

Troy, NY----The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team hosted the Brewers of Vassar College on Wednesday evening in the Neff Athletic Center. The contest was the first women's volleyball in the facility for the Gators. Vassar would take the match 3-0 with scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-13. Vassar is now 3-0 on the year and Sage falls to 1-4.

Sage's junior outside hitter Sarah Peacock (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) added eight kills and eight digs for the Gators, while senior hitter Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) added seven kills and six digs. Sophomore setter Kristyn Buonincontra (Shelton, CT/Shelton) led the squad with her 19 assists and four digs.

Leading the way for Vassar was junior libero Chelsea Mottern (Bound Brook, NJ/Rutgers Prep) as she collected six aces with 14 digs. Rookie hitter Chloe McGuire (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) recorded 10 kills, 13 digs, a pair of solo blocks and five block assists.

In the first game, Sage was down 6-3 before tying the action at 8-8 and again at 23-23 before Vassar won the first game, 26-24. In the second game, Sage was down 9-3 and tied the action at 10-10 and would mount a 15-10 lead before the Brewers would tie the score at 20-20 and take the second game, 25-20.

Sage returns to action on September 11-12 as they will compete in the Nazareth College Tournament, while Vassar will take to the courts again on September 12 when they travel to Montclair State University for a 2 p.m. match-up with the Red Hawks.
