Three Gators Earn Player of the Week Honors

Freshman forward Nicole Killeen (Petersburg) scored the game-winning goal as the Russell Sage College Soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Farmingdale State College last Monday to help earn her Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week. Killeen’s goal in the 28th minute proved to be the difference as the Gators handed the Rams their only loss in 11 games against Skyline Conference opponents this season. Killeen scored eight goals, including three game-winning goals in 16 games for Sage this season.

Senior Catelyn Samoranski (Balston Spa) was named Skyline Conference Player of the Week after earning Most Valuable Player of the Skyline Conference Women’s Volleyball Championship. In two Skyline tournament matches, Samoranski averaged 5.17 kills and 3.33 digs per game while hitting .394 (31-3-71). In a 3-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary in the semifinals, Samoranski had 13 kills along with eight digs and two service aces. In the championship match against Farmingdale State, she hit .529 with 18 kills, 12 digs and four service aces in helping the Gators capture their first conference title and NCAA Division III Tournament bid.  Samoranski was also named Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the week for her efforts.

Middle blocker Nicole Corbett (Castleton) gathered her fourth Skyline Rookie of the Week award for the 2007 season as she was a standout throughout the conference tournament.  Corbett averaged 3.33 kills and 1.50 blocks per game while hitting .415 (20-3-41). In the semifinals against Mount Saint Mary, she hit .588 with ten kills and seven total blocks. Corbett added 10 kills and two blocks in the championship against Farmingdale State.

The Gator Volleyball team will travel to Stevens Institute of Technology Thursday to face SUNY Cortland at 1pm in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  Killeen helped the Sage Soccer team to one of the best seasons in the programs history, as they finished 9-4-3.
