Sage volleyball team opened action at nearby Union Invitational

SAGE GATORS OPEN ACTION AT UNION COLLEGE INVITATIONAL; SAGE TAKES SECOND PLACE IN POOL PLAY

Schenectady, NY----The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team opened competition on Friday at the two-day Union College Invitational. Sage would face a familiar opponent in their first match as they met Vassar. The Gators would fall, 3-0. Vassar remains perfect on the year at 5-0. Sage then recorded a win in five sets over Oswego to snap the team's losing streak and finish second in pool play along the way. Sage is now 2-10 on the year. Oswego stands at 2-7. Action wraps on Saturday at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center. The Gators open action facing Hartwick College at 10 a.m. and Hunter College at noon.

Sage would jump out to a 15-9 lead over the Brewers in game one, but lost momentum as they dropped the first game, 25-12. Games two (25-14) and three would go to Vassar as well (25-18).

Sage's senior middle hitter Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) recorded six kills with six digs, while junior outside hitter Sarah Peacock (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) posted seven kills with 15 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Bishop Gibbons) added 15 digs for the Gators, while sophomore Kristyn Buonincontra (Shelton, CT/Shelton) added 16 assists with seven digs.

 

 

In the night cap, Sage would take the Lakers to five games after winning the first two. Sage won the first two games 25-17, before the Lakers tied the action with a 25-18 victory and a 26-24 win. The final set went to the Gators, 15-12 as Sage won the match, 3-2.

Junior Nicole Corbett (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) racked up 12 kills and four blocks, while Jones also added 12 kills with 15 digs. Junior hitter Michelle DeNisco (New Hampton, NY/Goshen) added seven kills and six blocks, while Wilson led the team with 21 digs. On the day, she had 36 digs.
